Step by Step Graphic Organizer to help Students in Writing Tasks
Most student writers spend less than one minute planning (Writing Better, 2005)
Draft:Builder is an application that steps students through the planning, elaboration and draft writing process in a systematic way. It has ready-to-use templates for different types of writing (e.g. Book reports, vocabulary study) as well as blank templates. It can be used with Read:OutLoud, Co:Writer, and Write:OutLoud, or with other word prediction and word processing applications.
Draft:Builder breaks down the process into three manageable steps:
- Note Taking
- Writing the first Draft
With this structure, students learn to generate ideas and organize them to form a cohesive paper. Draft:Builder is particularly useful to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Asperger's who have trouble with organization.
Who Needs Draft:Builder?
Draft:Builder benefits students and writers with these characteristics:
- Poor organisation
- Difficulty understanding how ideas and information are related
- Overwhelmed by all of the tasks involved in writing a paper
- Struggles to follow the writing process (idea generation, note-taking, etc)

Brainstorming is where students add concepts and ideas to the outline on the left and a visual map is automatically created. Students can easily change the order and outline level with drag-and-drop techniques or with the one-click arrow bottoms.
|Expanding Ideas, students add short notes that include details and assign them to an outline point. They may reorganize at any time by dragging them to different locations in the outline.
||Writing the First Draft, students drag notes from the outline and drop them into the draft area. This creates the first draft. Then, students can type more sentences or add punctuation and capitalization.
