Provides students with disabilities access to a standards-based math program

Teaching to Standards: MATH is a systematic math curriculum for middle and high school students with moderate-to-severe developmental disabilities, including autism.

  • Shown effective with students with significant developmental disabilities
  • Accommodates students who communicate nonverbally
  • Appropriate for middle school through high school age students
  • Multi-year curriculum
  • Scripted lessons
  • 5 levels of teacher support
  • Aligns to state and national standards, including NCTM and the common core
  • Covers Geometry, Algebra, Data Analysis, and Measurement

Two years of ongoing research at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte have shown the program to be highly effective in teaching math skills aligned to NCTM standards. Each student has his/her own MathWork book. Daily lessons begin with a real-world story illustrated with picture cues, and are taught with fading support levels. Stories are read to the students so no minimum reading level is required. A graphic organizer presents a problem for every story. Students write or place manipulatives to work out the solution.

Teaching to Standards: MATH is a multi-year program for students in middle school through high school with:

Teaching to Standards: MATH Foundations

Teaching to Standards: MATH is based on exhaustive analyses of published research on teaching basic academic skills to students with significant disabilities. Findings identified geometry, algebra, and problem solving as areas in need of evidence-based instruction in order for students with significant disabilities to gain access to NCTM math standards. The research team developed interventions to teach academics aligned with general education curriculum to students with significant cognitive disabilities, focusing on secondary level content and performance standards.
