BC Literacy Event

“Literacy is not age-dependent, but experience dependent… Progress begins when learning opportunity begins.”
                              Karen Erickson and David Koppenhaver

When

Thursday, February 26th, 2026

  • Full day session: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM (includes lunch)

Where

SET-BC
1750 West 75th Ave, Vancouver , BC

Guided by the principles in the groundbreaking Comprehensive Literacy for All (by Karen Erickson and David Koppenhaver), the BC Literacy event will be a unique opportunity to explore how Readtopia sparks curiosity, joy, and empowerment in learners with complex needs.

You’ll learn about current Canadian Readtopia implementations, from multiple perspectives and explore the critical daily routines with Maureen Donnelly, Director of Curriculum at Building Wings.

Discover why assuming potential and believing that students with complex needs can benefit from comprehensive literacy instruction can be transformative.

Featured Guests:

  • Maureen Donnelly, Director of Curriculum at Building Wings and one of the authors of ReadtopiaGO
  • Canadian Educators who have implemented Readtopia in their schools.
  • Heather Kavsak, parent of a student in the Halton District School Board (virtual) who integrates Comprehensive Literacy for All in the lives of her children.

Please note: There is no fee for this professionals-only event but lunch will be provided and space is limited, so all potential attendees must register and will be reviewed and approved. Depending on demand we may have to limit attendance from any one organization or school district to ensure broad representation. We appreciate your understanding.

Why Readtopia?

Readtopia is a comprehensive, research-based literacy program that supports students with complex learning profiles through:

  • Engaging, age-respectful content
  • Systematic alphabet and phonics instruction
  • Scaffolded texts and video for learning about relevant topics while developing critical background knowledge and vocabulary
  • Lessons and activities designed to spark communication and stimulate cooperation and social interaction

All with the explicit support educators need to manage limited resources and time.
