The Alea system's modular approach enables gaze interaction and computer control on most existing computers. The camera and illumination unit is fully self-contained, connecting to the computer via a USB 2 port.
Using the provided VESA-mount adapter, the camera and illumination unit can be attached to most TFT screens.
Typical users include patients with ALS, MS, spinal injuries, cerebral palsy, and many others. After an easy, one-time user calibration, the system can be completely controlled by eye movements.
Please note, a monitor or tablet is not included. The Intelligaze here is shown mounted with a Gridpad for illustration purposes, only.
Desktop 2.0
This package comes with software to control Windows, Desktop 2.0. Desktop 2.0 emulates, right-click, left-click, drag and brings other key functionality to run Windows software with just your eyes.
Application CenterThe IntelliGazeTM Application Center acts as a desktop for gaze-controlled applications. It allows the easy integration of 3rd party applications into the gaze controlled environment. These applications do not necessarily have to be gaze-aware. It is even possible to enter the Windows desktop and control standard applications.
Other Software
You can also use other common software specifically set-up for eye-gaze control with the Alea, including the Grid, Look to Learn and others.
Tracking Status
Because the system has no adjustable hardware parts, the positioning with respect to the user is the only remaining task before the first gaze calibration can be started.
An easy-to-understand tracking status indicator helps the operator set-up the system. Head-location as well as eye tracking status are accessible to the operator without the need to understand the internal processing at all, while showing enough information to sort out any issues that may arise.
Calibration
The system needs to be calibrated to the individual subject once after system set-up. The quick interactive calibration is performed by following an animated dot with your eyes and fixating on several locations on the screen. A typical calibration takes less then 30s.
The calibration routine can be adapted to individual requirements by selecting the number of fixation targets, manual or fully automatic operation, target size, etc.. The calibration can also take into account limited vision on a particular eye or strabism.
The Intelligaze system can be easily integrated with standard TFT monitors, Tablet PCs or similar. The system includes a VESA-mount adapter that attaches to virtually any TFT-monitor, which can be either positioned on a desk or mounted on a monitor arm.
Once attached, the camera unit and the monitor form a solid unit and can be moved around or stored away easily.
The small size and light weight of the Intelligaze unit make it also very easy to integrate even into mobile setups and bed-side installations. Relying on USB2, it can also be separated from the PC by several meters.
The camera is connected via a standard USB-interface to the computer. Using USB, the system can be set-up with almost any up-to-date stationary or portable computer without additional interface cards or power supplies.
