Celebrating Student Success with Eye Gaze Technology

At Bridges Canada, we are always inspired by the ways students engage with assistive technology in meaningful and empowering ways. During a training session at a Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board school, we had the opportunity to witness a powerful moment of a student achievement that we are proud to share.

The session was initially centered around Henry, a student who regularly uses an eye gaze system as part of his daily learning. Henry began the day confidently, participating in several activities with accuracy and focus. After a productive session, he stepped away for lunch, creating an opportunity for another student, Kloe, to explore the technology.

Kloe is not the primary user of the eye gaze system and has had limited experience with it due to her medical needs. However, when given the chance, she approached the activity with curiosity and determination.

Using the Inclusive Eye Gaze Learning Curve software, Kloe completed a colouring task with minimal support. Her second activity involved filling in a butterfly image, and with gentle prompts from her Educational Assistant to help guide her gaze, Kloe demonstrated impressive independence and accuracy. As she completed the task, the entire group broke into spontaneous applause. It was a genuine celebration of her ability and the inclusive environment that made this moment possible.

Kloe’s success also had a ripple effect. Inspired by what he saw, Henry returned from lunch eager to resume his work. Motivated by Kloe’s performance, he re-engaged with the eye gaze system and completed a new series of activities with enthusiasm and precision.

This session reminded us of the transformative impact of accessible technology when it is made available to all learners. At Bridges Canada, we believe in creating opportunities where every student can shine. Seeing Kloe and Henry support and inspire one another through technology was a powerful example of what is possible when we prioritize inclusion in education.
